ZombiU was a surprise in many ways. Beyond being a Zombi game with blood and exclusive violence to a Nintendo console, it surprised from formal perspective with which I had been conceived: a title survival which could be participants in a somewhat deeper way other projects through the Gamepad. Many liked, others not so much, and it was up to them annoyed. Regardless of the different opinions on the subject, it was here that lay the magic of its gameplay.
When it was confirm that the game would be exclusive to the Wii U and reach other platforms, many did not know how to take the decision. While it was possible to think that this would happen, it was not being entirely logical because it was a title whose letter was based on the control touchscreen Nintendo.
Now we are here with a slight change in their name and playing it in a different system. How much has changed Zombi (without the U) almost three years after its launch? Even more importantly, what gives this version we have not already seen on the Wii U?
Zombi puts us in the shoes of a survivor in an undead apocalypse that have taken over the planet completely. The identity of the hero does not care at all since this will change as we play. In brief delve more into it.
Set in a fictional version of London and alternates, we wake up in the middle of a protected bunker beneath the surface of the earth. Once there, a mysterious voice through a radio, we begin to explain the situation and the missions that we must take to leave the place alive.
As we venture into the place, gradually we realize that we are in an area that is interconnected with several locations in the capital. Whether it’s through sewers or through tunnels that lead us by the subway construction, it seems that is interconnected with each other.
The main preposition of the game makes us question about which is the game is structured: How long will I survive?
Needless to explain that one of the essential objectives of the campaign is trying to escape, survive and / or face to eat brains. What it does not hurt to say is that, if you die, your character will become a Zombi. When this happens the game will put us in the shoes of a new hero who, for some reason, wake up in the same place where the story began. Their mission? Back to the point where our first hero perished and continue the campaign, but not before running into the newly infected we controlled and still count on the team we had.
As such and instead introduce a deep history – that ultimately does not have – what Ubisoft wants us to understand this is that the main challenge of the game is to finish the season with the fewest possible heroes. Therefore, and although each of the characters who will control appear to be different people, not matter much since they all checked in a manner virtually identical.
Zombi mechanics are those of a firs person survival game. Being a survivor, we will have a backpack in which charge with all our weapons, ammunition and tools that allow us to survive the infection. Given its small space, administration of our team it will become a major part and which, if not properly ration it, we could be in a critical situation that leads to our death.
To defend ourselves, we will have at our disposal different types of weapons: pistols, shotguns or rifles; explosive, mines, grenades and light; or even more of combat such as shovels, picks, bats with nails and stick cricket.
As an apocalyptic world, ammunition and bullets are extremely rare, so the use of firearms be relegated more to a method of escape or control for when we come face stronger enemies or see us facing a wave of Zombis.
Finally we will have a scanner that will be of use to analyze different tracks, devices or specific points within the locations to proceed with our escape. It is in this last item where lies the main difference of the game from the original title Wii U.
A fundamental part of the version for the Nintendo console fell on the use that is given to the Wii U with the latter device as well as a few other options. The console gamepad served us for several things, such as handling the menus of our team, using the map and the radar, interaction with some external devices such as electric locks and latches, operation of the scanner, and even to attack using its sensors.
One of the most recurrent complaints who proved the original title was his interaction with the command of the screen. For many, it use in real life as if it were a tool we have in the game a somewhat tedious task until it became forced. However, now that we could play the same but from a new perspective, we can realize that ultimately the Nintendo control was one of the main attractions of the game.
In Zombi, it was left untouched the difficulty level of the game and only some aspects were adapted so that they could play correctly (read Gamepad options). The campaign remains the same, a journey in which we will continue feeling helpless, weak and clumsy to face a hostile world filled with dangers.
Nevertheless, without the command of Wii U undermines that feeling and sense of survival that was unique to the original. This is not to say for any reason that the gameplay be hampered or impaired. The game is still driving it well and be extremely comfortable at the controls of the consoles, but the effect of tension that resulted from having to concentrate on two screens at once in some cases has been reduced.
Perhaps the most important of these lies with graphic section. Although the title came just a few years ago, this area shows that did not receive the necessary attention. At the time ZombiU the game looked good in the Wii U and give the feint of being a decent game that could be on par with what offered the Xbox 360 and PS3. Now and in the versions of PS4, Xbox One and PC, the games does look more like last generation game.
Regarding his game modes, absence and removal of the local multiplayer is something that makes sense to port as more empty over the original version. The multiplayer offering more than was paid to brag to our friends what could the Wii U and give us a bit of pleasant entertainment.
Conclusion
For better or worse, Zombi is a good port of the main campaign exclusive title Wii U. The game manages to keep almost intact the experience that the title offered by a more than adequate adapting their controls. Few details on where the game fails are the same that make this version is overshadowed by its original and for being a current generation console it could have been improved more. Zombi will provide you with the enjoyment of the same campaign and various options that the original has.
