Mass Effect 2, arguably one of the biggest games of 2010 so far, has had new DLC come out last week, Overlord.
Overlord brings back the Hammerhead, the vehicle from the earlier Firewalker DLC. Shepard and squad drop down onto a uncharted world, much like the Mako from Mass Effect 1. This is one of several Vehicle Segments. They are split up by normal gameplay on foot. The Hammerhead controls well. There are even some platforming parts with the Hammerhead, which are actually quite enjoyable. The exploration is good, because of the easy navigation and how nice the enviroment around you is. There are beautiful vistas, big ponds, waterfalls, its all good to luck at. But, where there is a positive, a negative presents itself. The combat isn't to fun. Aiming is fine, and like I said, vehicle control makes it easier, but the Hammerhead is to weak. Its like shooting tissues. The vehicle is to weak, and the missles attached to your vehicle don't really offset the weakness. You're combat strategy will eather be moving really fast, or jumping out of cover. Traveling? Good. Combat? The very opposite. But overall, the vehicle sequences are fun.
The story is where this DLC really presents itself. The plot is unrelated to the main quest, but it borrows elements, like the Geth, to create this experiance. A man, David, has a very intelligent mind, so he volunteered to be the subject of Project Overlord. The point is to see if they can merge David's mind with the Geth to create an AI figurehead for the Geth to obey and follow, but the results were disastrous. Its pretty straight-foward, but done very well. The enviroment itself lends to the story, with the little details, and the many signs of the urgency around you. Destroyed corridors, audio logs telling you how things went wrong, everything in the setting contributes to the story itself, which is a tremendous feat. At the end, the game throws a twist and presents you with a Paragon or Renegade choice. I wont spoil anything, but the ending situation is so emotionally powerful it will probably make even the most hardcore Renegade think twice before choosing the renegade choice.
Overlord is a three hour DLC for 560 MS points. Unlike its predecessor, Stolen Memory, you wont get to take home a new weapon or squadmate, so the DLC doesnt have any long term effect, but if you're looking for an epic experiance with tons of action and a deep story that will defiantly hit home, Bioware has done it again.
