CANUCKS FORWARD KESLER TO APPEAR ON COVER OF NHL 2K11

Ryan Kesler has been on quite a roll of late.

At the recent Olympics, he scored in the men's hockey final and emerged with a silver medal as part of an impressive young U.S. team. Since returning to the Vancouver Canucks, he has three goals in four games -- with two of those goals coming in Detroit near where he grew up in Livonia.

And now the 25-year-old can celebrate being the cover athlete for the NHL 2K11 video game, following in the footsteps of Alexander Ovechkin, Rick Nash, Jason Spezza, Joe Thornton, Marty Turco, Martin St. Louis, Jeremy Roenick, Chris Drury and Brendan Shanahan.

Kesler calls it the "icing on the cake" after his Olympic experience.

"Everything just keeps getting better for me," he told The Canadian Press. "I'm very excited."

Kesler admits the only way he thought he'd ever be on a video game box was "if I put my own picture on there."

"It's a dream come true for me. ... I grew up playing and to be on the cover of 2K is unbelievable," he said.

Once known for his defensive skills -- he was a finalist last year for the Selke Trophy -- Kesler is enjoying a career year on offence with 19 goals and 40 assists in 65 games this season.

"I expected to maybe crash after the Olympics a little bit," he said. "Playing in front of my friends and family the first couple of games helped with that. I'm still, I think, on that Olympic high. I've been feeling good out there, I've been skating and using my strengths."

Kesler was involved with the game last year, taking part in an outdoor Las Vegas motion capture session with Ovechkin, who was the face of NHL 2K10.

"Obviously he's the best of the best," Kesler said of the Washington Capitals sniper.

But the Canucks forward takes pride in his game.

"I'm not a flashy scorer like Ovechkin by any means but I think I'm exciting in my own right," he said. "I think my performance in the Olympics is why 2K picked me to be on the cover."

That was confirmed by 2K Sports, which is engaged in an annual battle with EA Sports' NHL title. The EA game is made in Burnaby, B.C.

"Ryan is one of the most talented and exciting players to watch in the NHL today and his popularity has grown exponentially since the recent success of Team USA at the Olympics," Greg Thomas, senior vice-president of sports development for 2K, said in a statement.

Kesler is also a keen gamer, playing everything from sports titles to first-person shooters. But there has been little time to settle down in front of a console recently.

As the cover boy for this year's game, available this fall for the Nintendo Wii, Kesler jokingly says he wouldn't mind having his player attributes bumped up a little bit.

"Usually they're true to form, they're very accurate -- their attributes," he said. "I expect no special treatment this time."

Kesler probably won't need any. He was a plus-8 last season, when he had 26 goals and 33 assists in 82 games. He won 54 per cent of his faceoffs and ranked seventh among league forwards with 70 blocked shots.

NHL 2K11 is developed by California-based Visual Concepts.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=313064

2K Games announced today that it has signed a license agreement with Playboy magazine for a unique in-game integration to use more than 50 of their vintage covers and Centerfolds in Mafia® II, this year’s highly anticipated epic mobster game for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC. Set in the fully realized and immersive 1940s and 1950s American urban cityscape of Empire Bay, Mafia II will enable players to collect virtual copies of the iconic magazine, which has served as the definitive guide to lifestyle and culture for men since December 1953.

Quote:
“While most mob-inspired games’ emphasis is solely on action, Mafia II features a deep and compelling narrative that is embellished with a sophisticated, era-evoking atmosphere,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “In partnering with Playboy, we are able to add a unique element of authenticity to the game by using vintage images from the magazine that illustrate the power of Playboy’s influence on the attitudes and culture of that generation.”

Click on the image to enlarge.

Mafia II is a beautifully crafted look into the dark and unforgiving world of the Mafia where clothing, cars, music and advertising are meticulously created to replicate an American city in the ’40s and ’50s. Players will easily become engaged in the game’s cinematic, Hollywood-style experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing city that transports them to a time when rock-n-roll first strummed its guitar and chrome-plated hot rods roared down boulevards.

Quote:
“For more than 55 years, Playboy has been a part of America’s pop culture landscape, engaging its readers with insightful features, interviews and fashion spreads, as well as pictorials of some of the world’s most beautiful women,” said Playboy magazine’s Editorial Director Jimmy Jellinek. “Mafia II is set when Playboy first came into vogue and features characters whose style and attitudes mirror content from our early issues.
When you believe you’ve created the most successful entertainment product in history and you’re owed millions of dollars in royalties, you don’t go without a fight, right?

Ex-Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella have sued Activision for unpaid royalties and the “contractual rights” to control “Modern Warfare-branded games”.
West and Zampella were sensationally fired from the Acti-owned studio this week, with the publisher citing “insubordination” as a reason for ousting the duo.

“Activision has refused to honor the terms of its agreements and is intentionally flouting the fundamental public policy of this State (California) that employers must pay their employees what they have rightfully earned,” said O’Melveny & Myers LLP attorney Robert Schwartz in a press release.

“Instead of thanking, lauding, or just plain paying Jason and Vince for giving Activision the most successful entertainment product ever offered to the public, last month Activision hired lawyers to conduct a pretextual ‘investigation’ into unstated and unsubstantiated charges of ‘insubordination’ and ‘breach of fiduciary duty,’ which then became the grounds for their termination on Monday, March 1st.”

Quite obviously, the two developers aren’t exactly “happy”.

“We were shocked by Activision’s decision to terminate our contract,” said West. “We poured our heart and soul into that company, building not only a world class development studio, but assembling a team we’ve been proud to work with for nearly a decade. We think the work we’ve done speaks for itself.”

Zampella added: “After all we have given to Activision, we shouldn’t have to sue to get paid.”

West and Zampella are suing Activision not only for unpaid money, but for control of the Call of Duty brand.

“Modern Warfare 2 is arguably one of the most successful games in history and together with Call of Duty, has generated more than $3 billion in sales for Activision,” said the suit.

“In addition, Activision seized control of the Infinity Ward studio, to which Activision had previously granted creative control over all Modern Warfare-branded games. The suit was filed to vindicate the rights of West and Zampella to be paid the compensation they have earned, as well as the contractual rights Activision granted to West and Zampella to control Modern Warfare-branded games.”

Activision has now confirmed that Sledgehammer is creating a new Call of Duty “action-adventure,” and that another title in the series is due for release in 2011.

Infinity Ward itself is currently working on two Modern Warfare 2 DLC packs.

Atari and Eden Games return to the islands for Test Drive Unlimited 2, the sequel to the hit 2006 online sandbox driving game. How does 2 compare to the original? The difference is night and day - and vehicle damage.

Test Drive Unlimited was a pretty big Xbox 360 title when it came out in 2006. It was a prime example of the potential of Xbox Live online multiplayer, allowing the player to see other drivers playing the game online, dropping in and out of races on the fly. It was a little buggy, sure, but we liked it.

Now Eden and Atari team up once again for Test Drive Unlimited 2, giving players a whole new island and features that should make this second installment far superior to the first. Weather effects, a day and night cycle, and vehicle damage up the ante in the sequel, with a revamped single player narrative mode that you can play both on and offline.

"After the highly successful Test Drive Unlimited which redefined the genre with massively open online racing, Test Drive Unlimited 2 will be an innovative evolution in racing games, expanding its unparalleled multiplayer experience and immersing players in a world full of new online content and lifestyle customization." said Jeff Lapin, CEO of Atari, SA. "The game fits squarely into our strategy of moving online and generating new revenue streams while maintaining our current retail business."

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is due out this fall on the Xbox 360, PC, and the PlayStation 3.

Call of Duty In Trouble?

The face of Call of Duty, one of the world’s biggest game franchises, drastically altered in the last 24 hours, with the story ballooning faster than you may have liked. What happened?

It was rumoured back in early January that Infinity Ward was not developing Modern Warfare 3. Newly-formed Activision studio Sledgehammer, headed by ex-Visceral bosses Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, was tipped as the game’s likely developer.

The following day, Schofield said the studio’s first game would be “quite unique”.
Fast forward to yesterday. Reports claimed that a security detail arrived at Infinity Ward and bosses Vince Zampella and Jason West vanished after a “meeting”. Both West and Zampella’s LinkedIn profiles switch IW to “past”.
Activision filed a SEC document citing a human resources investigation into “into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward.”
The story ramps up. A report claims the root of the trouble is that Infinity Ward hasn’t been paid any royalties for Modern Warfare 2.
Activision boss Bobby Kotick is then rumoured to be on-site at IW for a staff meeting.
Late last night, Acti dropped the bomb, confirming Sledgehammer as working on a new Call of Duty game, although the project is described as an “action-adventure”.
In the release, another Call of Duty game is apparently mentioned for release in 2011. A report claims this title is separate to the Sledgehammer game, but we’re still waiting for official clarification on this.
Activision further confirms the formation of a Call of Duty business unit and the departure of both West and Zampella from Infinity Ward.
Activision CEO Mike Griffith claims Infinity Ward is still “central” to the CoD IP.
The publisher reaffirms that it “expects to release a new Call of Duty game from Treyarch this fall. In addition, Infinity Ward is in development on the first two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2 for release in 2010.”
There’s a lot of rumour swirling this morning, but it’s bitty and noxious. A little like fallout.
